European Womens Hockey League – game mode season 2024/25
EWHL Regular Season:
the EWHL (League) will be played as one (1) home and away round in one group.
EWHL Play Offs:
in EWHL the teams placed 1-8 in the regular season will be eligible to participate in the quarter finals. After the last preliminary round game the teams ranked 1-3 have the right to pick their opponents (1st choice for winner of preliminary round, 2nd for 2nd, 3rd for 3rd). The quarter finals are played in CHL mode. The first game (Friday) will be played at the venue of the lower ranked team, the second game (Sunday) at the venue of the better ranked team. The four winners of the quarter finals are eligible to play the EWHL Semi Finals (CHL mode) – these will be played as best ranked team after regular season against lowest ranked team after regular season and second best ranked team against third best ranked team. The loosers of the semi finals will play for bronze (CHL mode), the winners for gold (CHL mode). The winner of the gold medal series will be the „EWHL Champion 2024-25“.
Game Points & League Standings:
(1) Regulation Time is 3 x 20 minutes. Each game must produce a winner.
(2) The team which wins a game after regulation time will receive three points in the league standings, while the losing team will receive no points.
(3) If the game is undecided at the end of regulation time, each team will be awarded a point in the league standings; after a three minute break without ice resurfacing, the teams will then play a sudden victory overtime. Should the sudden victory overtime still fail to produce a winner, the game will be decided by a penalty shootout in accordance with IIHF rules (start with 5 different shooters per team [resp. unless the winner is already clear]). The winner (after sudden victory overtime or the penalty shootout) will be awarded another point in the league standings.
(4) Ranking in the standings will be decided as follows. Firstly: Number of points. If points are the same, the following calculations ensue: If teams are equal on points the following tie-breakers are applied:
a. If two or more teams are on same level on points, the direct duel results count. Should three or more teams be on the same level on points, those teams’ scores are being recalculated in a sub-group if all teams in this sub-group played the same number of games, considering only those matches between the members of said sub-group. Ranking differential:
i. Higher amount of points in the direct duel(s)
ii. Better Goal Difference in the direct duel(s)
iii. Higher number of scored goals in the direct duels
b. Better Goal Difference overall
c. Higher number of scored goals overall
